I stayed in Mayrhofen @ Gasthof Zillertal. It was the perfect location for a backpacker without a car.
2. How to get there
Take bus 4102 to Schlegeis Stausee, the reservoir bus stop where the Olpererhütte trailhead is located. The bus stop is right in front of the Mayrhofen train station. The road to the reservoir is open from late May until mid-October. The best time to visit Olpererhütte is in summer and early fall because in spring there will be snow on the trail. If you plan on traveling here during the shoulder season, check verbund.com for road conditions.
3. which route to take
There are multiple routes. I hiked the blue route (shortest), which was trail 502 and 6 miles. This is the most popular.
