Slovenia Travel: A Wholesome Adventure You Can’t Miss
If you’re planning a European backpacking trip, let me tell you, Slovenia was such a wholesome surprise. From the turquoise waters of Lake Bled to the mountains in the Soča Valley, it was like hitting the reset button on life. Whether you’re into nature, a bit of adventure, or just want to vibe in a cute hostel with good people, Slovenia is calling your name. Here’s everything we did, loved, and learned, so you can pack your bags and do it too.
If you want all the juicy details, I recommend checking out my Ultimate Slovenia Road Trip podcast episode, where I break down everything in real-time, complete with stories you won’t find here!
Exploring Slovenia: Highlights and Must-Visit Places
Ljubljana: A Quick Stopover
Let me just say that we didn’t give Ljubljana the time it deserved. We got in late, had dinner, and crashed at a cool hostel with free breakfast. While our brief time there wasn’t mind-blowing, fellow travelers said the Old Town is a vibe, so don’t sleep on it. If you’re picking up a rental car, book through Sixt. They gave us a freakin’ Audi and no young driver fee, woo!
Pro Tip: Make sure you pack a USB-C cord for your car! We would’ve been toast without Ally’s cable.
Lake Bled: Dreamy and Touristy (But Worth It)
Lake Bled is like stepping into a fairytale: insanely blue water, a backdrop of mountains, and vibes for days. Here’s what we loved about this wholesome spot:
- Hiked Around the Lake: Instead of paying $15 for the castle, our hostel recommended a free viewpoint for sunrise that was just as good (if not better). Ultimate Slovenia Road Trip Guide
- Tried Bled Cream Cake: Famous for a reason! But real talk: Share one. Ally and I got two, and the sugar hit us hard before dinner.
- Hiked Vintgar Gorge: It’s one of the most beautiful gorges in the world! If it’s peak season, buy your tickets online.
- Stayed at Hostel Bled: Super close to everything, great vibe, and parking available (just let them know ahead of time!).
In the podcast episode, I take you along with me for the sunrise hike, stroll through the gorge, and show you where we had the most peaceful picnic ever! Watch the episode!
Soča Valley to Bovec: Adventure Heaven
The Soča Valley? Chef’s kiss. Here’s the rundown:
- Canyoning in Bovec: Do it. I can’t emphasize this enough. I booked through the hostel, got a discount (just $55), and it was hands down one of the most fun, adventurous things I’ve ever done. Sliding down waterfalls? Iconic.
- Vršič Pass: Driving through this mountain pass was breathtaking. Even with some fog and rain, the views were stunning, and the trees were just starting to turn. There is also some amazing hiking that we didn’t get to do.
- Waterfall Peričnik: If you love waterfalls, Waterfall Peričnik is a must. It’s a quick 10-minute walk from the parking lot, and the trail lets you walk behind the waterfall itself. The scenery was next-level breathtaking.
Postojna Caves: A Total Surprise
We almost skipped these caves, and I’m so glad we didn’t. They’re the oldest and biggest caves in Europe, and honestly? They hit me in the feels. The guide said, “Beauty comes from being surrounded by darkness,” and wow, if that’s not a metaphor for life, I don’t know what is.
Budget Breakdown: What I Spent
Here’s the damage for five days in Slovenia (all prices in USD):
- Accommodation: $153 (hostels are where it’s at)
- Transportation: $97 for the rental car + $50 for gas
- Activities: $95 (canyoning, gorges, and caves)
- Food: $90 (we cooked a lot but still enjoyed local spots)
- Gas & Parking: $77
- Total: ~$512, or about $100/day. Not bad, right?
Reflections and Lessons Learned
Slovenia was a wholesome reset I didn’t know I needed. After the wild party vibes of Budapest, this place snapped me back to my “wholesome shit.” It’s the kind of destination where you wake up early to watch the sunrise, hike through mountains, and breathe in fresh air that makes you feel alive. It’s also a place to grow and heal.
Pack Your Bags
If you’ve been debating whether Slovenia should make your travel list, this is your sign to go. From the serene lakes to the adrenaline-pumping canyoning, it’s a place that will surprise you in the best way.
